Mill Operations Manager

Brief Description: Hanford Mills Museum (HMM) operates an authentic water and steam-powered National Register-listed historic site in East Meredith, NY.  The Museum seeks a well-rounded person to assume the safe operation of Hanford Mills Museum’s late 19th/early 20th century sawmill, gristmills, woodworking machines, waterwheel, water turbine and steam power plant.  The Mill Operations Manager is a contributing member of a staff team responsible for the stewardship, preservation, operation and interpretation of Hanford Mills. The Museum is a working water- and steam-powered late 19th through early 20th century Mill complex where a flat-belt power transfer system powers an operating circular sawmill, two gristmills and several woodworking machines. The Museum’s historic site also includes 15 other historic structures situated on about 10 acres, and bordered by acres of woods and fields.

Responsibilities: The Mill Operations Manager is responsible for the safe operation and stewardship of Hanford Mills Museum’s unique and authentic Mill, an historic rural-industrial complex listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

    Mill Stewardship

    • The care and maintenance of the Mill complex, including the structure, the water- and steam-power generation systems (including waterwheel, water turbine, steam boiler and steam engines), flat belt power transfer system (belts, pulleys and shafts), and the historic machinery collection.
    • Research, planning, and coordination of preservation measures in the Mill.
    • Implement Mill maintenance and stewardship projects where appropriate.

    Mill Operations

    • Maintaining a climate of operations that focuses on safety for all staff, volunteers and visitors.
    • Primary sawyer, miller and engineer responsible for operating and interpreting the power generation and transfer systems, and demonstrating historic machines and equipment in the Mill complex.
    • Training and supervision of seasonal staff working in the Mill.
    • Supervising the responsible and thoughtful processing of raw materials and production of appropriate Mill-made items for sale in the gift shop.
    • Working with staff team to evaluate, plan, and implement safety, programming, interpretation and visitor services improvements.
    Other Duties

    • Assisting with the planning, coordination, implementation, and oversight of site-wide preservation and stewardship, and supervising site-wide maintenance activities.
    • A commitment to positive staff collaboration, outstanding visitor services, safe and sustainable operations, and other duties as assigned by the Executive Director.

Required Qualifications

  • Strong mechanical aptitude, problem-solving and interpersonal skills.
  • Training, experience, and/or the ability to adapt his/her skill set to operating and maintaining water and steam-powered flat belt-driven power transfer systems.
  • An appreciation of historic preservation and the stewardship of historic industrial buildings, machinery, artifacts and landscapes

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Working knowledge of milling, woodworking, carpentry, steam boilers and engines.
  • Knowledge of the accepted practices, philosophy and ethics of museums and historic preservation activities, and a commitment to the stated Mission, Vision, goals and purposes of Hanford Mills Museum.
